Of course, my ultimate aim was to have a digital SLR. Nikon, Kodak, and Fuji make digital SLRs that take Nikon lenses, and were all I could consider without having to also buy a new lens system. And, Digital SLRs being quite expensive in any brand were something that needed to be carefully considered, both for quality and affordability. I had no interest in the Kodak models, which left the Fuji S2 Pro and the four Nikon models that were available as I began to seriously consider them in 2003. Therefore, those Digital SLRs that I considered follow.

The Nikon D1X, pictured above, was my dream Digital SLR, having replaced the Nikon D1, and even though it had dropped to $3900 in 2003 after being well over $4000, it was too far outside my budget. The Nikon D1H, and the D2H released in 2003 were also well above $3000 and outside my price range. That left only the Nikon D100 and Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro as the only two Digital SLRs that I might be able to afford.

The Nikon D100, in some ways was inferior to the Fuji S2 Pro, but was also superior in other ways. It has 6.1 effective megapixel quality, 3D Digital Matrix Image Control, ISO equivalency of 200-1600, takes CompactFlash or Microdrive cards, and weighs 24.7 ounces. One major thing I didn't like about the D100 was that its lowest ISO setting was only 200, compared to Fuji's 100.

The Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro is also a 6-Mexapixel camera, but also higher in price than the D100. It has an ISO equivalency of 100, 160, 200, 400, 800 and 1600. Like the D100, it had some great reviews, and if it had been more competitive in price with the D100 it may well have been my first choice for a Digital SLR.

And so, I'm sure, it comes as no surprise that the Nikon D100 became my first Digital SLR camera body.
