I've acquired over a dozen flashes over the years: Konica's X-14, X-20, X-24, and X-36; Nikon's SB-15, SB24, SB-80DX, SB-400, and SB-800; the Phoenix Ringlight; Vivitar's 283 and 285HV; and Sunpak's 221D, 322D, 433D, and DX-12R Ringlight.
The X-36 is probably the best of Konica's flash units, simply because it provides off-camera flash. However, it also provides various power settings. The X-24 (pictured above) seems to be the Konica flash most sought after and is the one I've used most often. However, the flash unit I use most with my Konica cameras is Vivitar's 283. I also have Sunpak's 221D and 322D flash units with modules dedicated to Konica. These also work well.

I also have a Sunpak 433D, dedicated for Nikon, however, it's seldom been used. Nikon Speedlights work so well with Nikon cameras that it's almost a sin not to use them. I have a SB-15 Speedlight, the SB-24 Speedlight, the SB-80DX Speedlight, and the SB-800 Speedlight. The latter (pictured left) is an amazing flash unit and is the single flash I use most often. The SB-15 is mostly used with my Nikon FE2, and the SB-24 with my F4. |

When I bought my Nikon D70s DSLR for use with a lightweight / hiking kit, I eventually also got the SB-400 as a lightweight flash to go with it. |

My Phoenix Righlight is a cheap flash for macro photography that is dedicated to the Nikon system, and which I don't recommend. Instead, I now use the Sunpak DX-12R Ringlight flash for film macro work. It's far better than the Phoenix. For digital, I needed yet another macro flash, and my choice for that was the Sigma EM-140 DG TTL Righflash. If I have to be pinned down for recommendations, I'd recommend the Konica X-36 or Vivitar 285HV for Konica cameras. For Nikon it'd be the newer SB-800 or whatever the current top-of-the-line Nikon Speedlight is by the time you read this. |
